About us

Ethro’s was established by Matthew Etherington in 2013 and has gone from strength to strength. Family run and contract free, you will find Ethro’s GYM in the town centre of Ashbourne, Derbyshire.  The GYM has something to offer every type of gym user, from beginners to advanced, free weights to functional, its all covered for you. There’s personal trainers on hand when you need them and a great vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

Whilst we’re known locally as being Ashbourne’s number one gym for free weights, we also understand that this isn’t for everyone which is why we’ve dedicated a room separate to the rest of the gym solely for cardio and functional training.

There are many misconceptions around weight lifting such as women shouldn’t lift or you will look too bulky. These are all just myths, it’s important to know that there’s many benefits men & women can get from lifting weights, including; improved posture, better sleep quality, increased metabolism and weight loss control. Ethro’s GYM has a large variety of pin and plate loaded machines from world leading brands such as Hammer Strength, Life Fitness and Precor.

Whilst weight training traditionally targets one muscle type for each exercise. Functional Training is a high intensity resistance training using machines, super-setting exercises to give you full body conditioning. Ethro’s GYM has  a dedicated room filled with a variety of kit including kettle bells, medicine balls, punch bags and a cross fit rig. If you incorporate functional training into your routine you will no doubt see very satisfying results.  

Cardiovascular (cardio) exercise has excellent benefits for the mind and body. When you engage in cardio exercise you are increasing the heart and respiratory rate and  increasing the flow of blood and oxygen throughout the body. Cardio burns fat, lowers stress and reduces the risk of heart attacks, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and the list goes on. Ethro’s has a varied selection of cardio machines to assist with you your program from exercise bikes to a stair master, a rowing machine to a cross trainer.

Whatever your fitness goal, our personal trainer can offer you the support and guidance with 
one-to-one or small group sessions.

I’m a fully qualified level 3 Personal Trainer and food nutritionist, a level 2 instructor with MMA fitness and a second dan black belt in Kempo Jujitsu with a Sensei at a local Dojo which I have been training towards since 2012.
